Youth and families in Stanislaus County are facing tremendous challenges. The region has been hit hard by the economic downturn, with a high unemployment rate as well as record numbers of home foreclosures. Many families report being unable to meet their basic needs, and 54% of young children in this county fall below 200% of the federal poverty level. The 172,366 children living in Stanislaus County rank in the bottom third of the state on eight health and wellness indicators. These indicators include, but are not limited to: • 36% of young school children feeling unsafe at school, • 33% of children whose weight is at an unhealthy level, and • 24% of 10th graders not passing the California High School Exit Exam. Additionally, youth arrest rates for the county are high, and there is an estimated 57 gangs present in Stanislaus County. Further, budget cuts continue to limit the ability of schools to provide enrichment and extracurricular activities for students.
